One of the most beautiful and iconic Alpine peaks. At 14,700 ft / 4,500 m, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps, and one of the toughest to climb. Still, the great Ueli Steck set the record time in climbing the north face in 2 hr. The four steep faces, rising above the surrounding glaciers, face the four compass points.

Monte Rosa (4,635 m / 15,200 ft) is the highest mountain in Switzerland and the second-highest in both the Alps and western Europe. The main summit, known as the Dufourspitze, is the culminating point of the Pennine Alps. The Gorner Glacier descends in gentle slopes on the western side of Monte Rosa and flows towards Zermatt. On the east a 2,400 metre high wall towers above the village of Macugnaga.

A 9km metre-gauge [mountain rack railway.] A 9km metre-gauge mountain rack railway. It leads from Zermatt up to the Gornergrat station (10,000 ft / 3,100 m). It is the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau. The Gornergrat is a starting point for many hikes, as it lies surrounded by 29 peaks rising above 13,000 ft / 4,000 m and several glaciers, including the Gorner Glacier (which is billed as the second longest glacier in the Alps). It leads from Zermatt up to the Gornergrat station (10,000 ft / 3,100 m). It is the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau. The Klein Matterhorn is the second highest peak of the Zermatt-Cervinia ski area in Switzerland, and the end point of the highest cable car in Europe.

Schwarzsee is a lake at Zermatt in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is located below Matterhorn at an elevation of 2,550 m. A chapel dedicated to Mary of the Snows borders the lake. It can be reached by cable car from Zermatt.

The Gorner Glacier is a valley glacier found on the west side of the Monte Rosa Massif close to Zermatt in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is about 14 km long and 1 to 1.5 km wide.

How to get there
Private cars are not permitted in Zermatt. You can drive to Tasch and then 4 mi by mountain train. Or by shuttle or taxi, from these airports:
- Geneva: 150 mi / 2 hr 45 min
- Zurich: 150 mi / 3 hr 30 min
- Turin: 200 mi / 4 hr
- Milan: 120 mi / 2 hr 45 min (may be closed in winter)
The ski slopes are connected by lifts to Cervinia, on the Italian side of the ridge. One can drive there from Milan or Turin.
