Attractions and sights

Among the main Interlaken's attractions are the mountains of Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger (all about 4,000 m / 13,000 ft high). Whilst the peaks of these mountains are accessible only to mountaineers, a mountain railway gives access to the Jungfraujoch, a coll (3,450 m / 11,300 ft) between the Jungfrau and the Mönch.

A cog-wheel railroad goes almost up to the summit, to the Jungfraujoch, a saddle between Jungfrau and the Mönch, at 3,450 m / 11,300 ft. It climbs first through Alpine meadows and then tunnels in rock and ice. It has an underground top terminal, and a mountain-top restaurant with views to kill. It also contains two stations in the middle of the tunnel, where passengers can disembark to observe the neighbouring mountains through windows built into the mountainside.
-
Thun and Brienz and the two beautiful Alpine lakes between which Interlaken is situated. You can swim in both. The water in Thun is generally warmer (~20°C in July/August). Lake Thun is quite popular for sailing. Take a boat trip: you will see many cute towns and beautiful buildings/small castles on your way (Spiez, Oberhofen, Thun).

Once Interlaken made the Victorians swoon with mountain vistas from the chandelier-lit confines of grand hotels; today it makes daredevils scream with adrenalin-loaded adventures. Though the streets are filled with enough yodelling kitsch, its adventure capital status has spawned a breed of funky bars, party-mad hostels and restaurants serving flavors more imaginative than fondue.

The mountains around Interlaken, especially Jungfrau foothills, are one of the best in the world for hiking and mountain biking. With Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau towering over your head, the scenery here is mind-blowing. Mountain railroads and Wengen ski lifts provide convenient access. Popular near-by hikes include Harder mountain and Schynige Platte.
-
A whole bunch of adrenaline sports are offered through Interlaken guide groups including tandem paragliding, hang gliding, skydivinng, bungee jumping, canyoning, river rafting, rock climbing, etc.
-
Interlaken is not a top ski resort, but there are two decent ski areas nearby: Muerren-Schlithorn (3,000 m top, 1,500 m vertical, 14 lifts) and Mannlichen-Wengen (2,500 m top, 1,500 m vertical, 19 lifts.) The latter is the home to Wengen downhill race, one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit.
-
The Alpine Garden on Schynige Platte boasts over 500 types of flora. Take a cog-wheel train trip to the 2,000 m (6,500 ft)-high plateau and be rewarded by magnificent views and an abundance of alpine flora, including Edelweiss. Despite all this, the main attraction is the hiking and the views.
