Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is divided into two halves. One is the medieval village on a hill, with its winding, narrow cobbled streets, clustered around the tower of a 10th century castle. The other, below, is the Cap Martin peninsula, with the secluded villas of the rich and famous, and the popular seaside resort of Carnolès.

Overlooked by the monolithic Fort Carré, Antibes is both a working port and a playground for the wealthy, whose million-dollar yachts are docked in Port Vauban. Beyond the picturesque Old Town and the numerous bars and restaurants by the port, is the Château Grimaldi, the castle that now houses the Picasso Museum with its large collection of the artist's paintings and ceramics.

A magnet for the international jet set and artists, Saint-Tropez's beaches are a big draw, with plenty of water sports, topless sunbathing the norm, and numerous seafront restaurants. Meander cobbled lanes in the old fishing quarters, watch old men play pétanque, or walk in solitary splendour from beach to beach along the coastal path. The three islands of Îles d'Hyères are: Île du Levant, mostly used by the French navy but with a long-established nudist colony in the village of Héliopolis and scuba diver tourists. Porquerolles is a hilly island covered with pine forest - good for hiking, biking and swimming. Port-Cros is a national park, with hiking trails through the forest and a marked underwater swimming route that can be explored with a waterproof audioguide.

Grasse is the home of the perfume industry. Views of Grasse are inspiring and the views of the coast from Grasse and the hills above are marvellous. The surrounding villages are generally charming and not as despoiled by tourists as their more famous neighbors towards the coast.
