According to legend, Nora was founded by a group of Iberians from Tartessus led by Norax, a mythological hero son of Hermes. It is believed to be the first town founded in Sardinia and to have been settled by the ancient Sherden or the Nuraghi people, and later colonized by Phoenicians. The ruins of Nora function as an open-air museum, and the remains of the theatre is occasionally used for concerts in the summer.

Asinara was created as a self-contained National Park in 1997. It hosted a prison for many years. The old prison structure, which was still in use up to only a few years ago, is present on the island. Mediterranean vegetation, also known as the Mediterranean maquis, completely covers the island although fires and other sources of environmental degradation have thinned out the vegetation. The island also holds a limited number of small Albino donkeys, which are a special yet mysterious characteristic of the Park, because the origin of these animals is unknown.

The Neptune Caves in Alghero which attract more than 150,000 visitors a year from all over the world are drawn by the wonderful spectacle of curious geological formations and the clear waters of the internal lake, as well as by the caves' historical importance. Sassari is second-largest and one of the oldest cities on the island. Since its origins at the turn of the 12th century, Sassari has been ruled by the Giudicato of Torres, the Pisans, the Sassaresi themselves in alliance with Genoa, the Aragonese and the Spanish, all of whom have contributed to Sassari's historical and artistic heritage. Sassari is a city rich in art, culture and history, and is well known for its beautiful palazzi, the Fountain of the Rosello, and its elegant neoclassical architecture, such as Piazza d'Italia (Italy Square) and the Teatro Civico (Civic Theatre).
