It is the ruined ancient Roman city, which was engulfed by Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. The sight is priceless from archeological point of view, as the city was buried under a layer of lapilli. The main buildings include the Amphitheatre, and temple of Apollo.
-
Mount Vesuvius is perhaps best known for its eruption in Roman times (24 August 79 AD), when Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed. The eruption left a large crater which has grown and shrunk with subsequent eruptions and this can still be visited today. At the top of the volcano is a crater rim that affords a view into the crater that still fumes slightly. Besides that you will have (only on clear days) a stunning panorama overseeing the Bay of Naples.

It is named after the ruined Roman city which forms its main attraction. Herculaneum was destroyed by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79, the same eruption that destroyed Pompei. Surrounded by volcanic rock, its location gives you a far clearer idea of the magnitude of the volcanic eruption.
-
It is the biggest Roman architectural museum in the World, even bigger than the National Museum of Rome. Its collection is astonishing both considering the quality and the quantity of the objects on display. If hosts some of the best mosaics and paintings recovered from the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Historical center of Naples has a lot of interesting medieval buildings of various architectural styles. But don't expect in the city centre the pristine conditions of many other major European cities, since the historical centre, unlike most European cities, is not the "downtown".
-
A huge medieval castle at the shore which houses the main city museum featuring various collections, but most importantly a picture gallery (with focus on 19th Century Italian painting). From the roof, you can get one of the best views of the city.

The oldest and most famous of Naples' ancient catacombs date to the 2nd century. Spread over two levels and decorated with early Christian frescoes, they contain a mix of tombs, corridors and broad vestibules held up by columns and arches. Naples underground city goes for over 400 km -- take a two-hour tour to explore it.
-
Palazzo Reale, built in 1600, renovated and redecorated by successive Bourbon rulers, once lorded over by a dim-witted king who liked to shoot his hunting guns at the birds in his tapestries, it is filled with salons designed in the most lavish 18th-century Neapolitan style.
