With pastel-colored houses casting shimmering reflections onto the glassy waters of the lake, and towering mountains on all sides, Hallstatt’s beauty alone would be enough to guarantee it fame. Boats chug tranquilly across the lake from the train station to the village, situated precariously on a narrow stretch of land between mountain and shore. Lake Hallstatt, long and narrow, with steep rocky shores, could be easily confused with a fjord.

The Salzkammergut is a resort area south-east of Salzburg. With its numerous lakes and mountains, the Salzkammergut offers many opportunities to take part in water sports, bathing, hiking, cycling, caving, golf and relaxing around lakes. The Katrinalm, an alpine pasture, is found near Bad Ischl.
-
The Dachstein Mountains are a mountain range in the Alps, bordering Hallstatt Lake on the south.
-
Dachstein Ice Cave, near Hallstatt, features undeground glaciers, icebergs, giant icicles, and fantastic ice formations. Guides will lead you through a cave of stalagmites down into “King Arthur’s Dom” and to the “large ice chapel” over 25 meter thick ice on the ground.
-
The Wolfgangsee is a majestic fjord-like glacial lake that stretches about 10 km. Boats, including the cinematic nostalgic boat, the Kaiser Franz Josef I paddle wheel steamer, sail along the lake, offering stunning views of towering mountains and access to hikes.
-
The steepest cogwheel steam railway in Austria has been operating from St. Wolfgang up to Schafberg Mountain (1,780 m) since 1893. In 45 minutes it climbs 1,200m in altitude and enables a breathtaking 360° view over seven of the Salzkammergut lakes and the majestic mountains of the Alps.
-
Hallstatt Salt Worlds is the World’s Oldest Salt Mine, now a museum. In 1734 Hallstatt miners discovered the body of a man that was conserved by salt, flat like a board. The journey in time in the Hallstatt Salt Worlds stretches from the Paleozoic to the Hallstatt time to the modern times of salt extraction today. Highlights are the giant slide with radar measuring, the ride on the mine train and the underground salt lake.
-
Deep valleys, cliffs, glacial lakes, alpine meadows and forests -- the views are stunning. The hikes range from easy strolls along the lake shore to strenuous climbs up the mountains, with over 1,000m elevation gain.
