The alluring district of Ribeira is made up of medieval streets and seedy alleyways. It is a crumbling but fascinating place, ending at a riverfront square. Wth photogenic traditional boats floating at the quayside overlooked by colorful ancient houses, this is the most picturesque spot in the city and the place everyone loves.

The entire bank of Douro river across from the old town is wine cellars -- most of the world's port wine is produced there. Tours and tastings are available from about 20 cellars, a minutes walk from Ribeira across the river.

The Igreja de São Francisco is the most prominent Gothic monument in Porto, being also noted for its outstanding Baroque inner decoration. Gilded carving runs up the pillars, over the altar, and across the ceiling. It is declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

With the most striking exterior of any church in Porto, the 18th Century Ingreja de Santo Ildefonso has a facade covered with some 11,000 blue and white azulejo tiles.

The Clérigos Church's bell tower can be seen from various points of the city and is one of its most characteristic symbols. Built in 1755, the tower reaches an impressive height of 250 feet and offers stunning views of the Old Town, the river, and beyond to the mouth of the Douro.

Old granite Porto Cathedral (Se do Porto) was rebuilt in the 18th century. It has 14th-century cloisters, decorated with gleaming azulejos tiles. A staircase leads to the second level and into a richly furnished chapter house, from which there are fine views through narrow windows.

Inaugurated in 1916, the historical station is known for its tile (azulejo) panels that depict scenes of the History of Portugal. It remains in regular use as a railway station

The Luís I Bridge is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between Porto and the wine cellar district. Completed in 1886 by a student of Gustave Eiffel, the two-deck bridge offers easy pedestrian access to the cellars and good views of Ribeira.
