The delightful old town is one of the most surreal looking in Spain, built on a sloping, curling finger of rock with precipitous sides that plunge down to the gorges of the Huécar and Júcar rivers. Because the town ran out of room to expand, some medieval houses dangle right over the abyss and are now a unique architectural attraction: the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses). Their origin remains uncertain, though there is proof of their existence in the 15th century. Throughout their history they have been refurbished several times.

Cuenca Cathedral was built from 1182 to 1270. The façade was rebuilt after it crumbled down in 1902. It is the first gothic style Cathedral in Spain, because of the influence of Alfonso VIII's wife, Eleanor, daughter of the King of England

If you don't have a fear of heights, cross the narrow bridge to take in the vertiginous view of the river below and the equally thrilling panorama of the Casas Colgadas. It's by far the best view of the city. The 16th-century stone footbridge over the Huécar gorge collapsed, and the current one was built in 1902. A path from the bridge descends to the bottom of the gorge, landing you by the bridge that you crossed to enter the old town.

Not a city at all, Ciudad Encantada (Enchanted City), is a series of large and fantastic mushroom-like rock formations erupting in a landscape of pines. This commanding spectacle was formed over thousands of years by the forces of water and wind on limestone rocks.

Museum of Spanish Abstract Art, housed inside on e of the hanging houses, has a collection of some 130 paintings, mainly by 1950s and 1960s Spanish artists. The works are almost all by the remarkable generation of Spanish artists who grew up in the 1950s and were forced to live abroad during the Franco regime.

Cuenca is much more than a beautiful historical center and the Enchanted City. It is also nature in its purest form. Good climbing. Albarracín is the top spot. The boulders scattered around the town make for some of the most fun, and challenging un-roped climbing in Europe.
