A magnificent rock just off the coast. Beach, waves, dunes. Prime windsurfing spot. State park

Bandon Dunes Resort has been consistently rated in the top 5 of the best golf resorts in North America. At the resort, there are 5 distinctly different courses built on a beautiful stretch of sand dunes perched 100 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes feature a dozen holes that run along the bluff overlooking 23 miles of sweeping, undisturbed shoreline. Bandon Trails begins on a massive dune, works its way through open meadows and upland forest, and then finishes in the dunes. Old Macdonald moves through dune to ocean revealing breathtaking views throughout.
-
Pistol River, 1 hr south of Bandon, is one of the most celebrated windsurfing spots in North America, a place of annual pro competition. Another spot just down from Face Rock, in the middle of Bandon, is quite on par. When the winds subside, the entire coastline becomes a surfing paradise. (A cold water paradise, that is. The water is cold year-round.)
-
Waterjet boats sail 50 mi up picturesque Rogue River, past wooden hills and into a narrow canyon, up over the rapids. Good chances to see wildlife up and close: eagles, ospreys, deer and bear. Alternatively, one can float down in a raft. The river is rather wild and technical in its upper part (at Grants Pass, OR) but then gradually mellows out before joining the ocean at Gold Beach, OR. All sorts of fishing along the way.
-
Stretching for 50 miles, the Oregon Dunes tower up to 500ft and undulate inland as far as 3 miles to meet coastal forests. The area inspired Frank Herbert to pen his epic sci-fi Dune novels. Unfortunately, most of the dunes are overtaken by noisy dune buggies. If you like unspoiled nature and don't mind hiking, barefooted, on the sand, the trail away from traffic is John Dellenback Trail in Umpqua Dunes.
-
Coquille River Lighthouse Originally named Bandon Light, was built in 1896. The light guided mariners past the dangerous shifting sandbars into the Coquille River and harbor at Bandon. The light contained a Fresnel lens and connected to the nearby keepers house by a wooden walkway.
-
Two national wildlife refuges, Oregon Islands and Bandon Marsh, are within the city limits. Bandon Marsh is renowned among bird watchers for being able to view rare shorebirds including Ruff, Hudsonian Godwit, and Mongolian Plover. The Oregon Islands provides wilderness protection to 1,853 small islands, rocks, and reefs plus two headlands, from the Oregon–California border to Tillamook Head.

Tiny Bandon bills itself as Oregon's cranberry capital. Each October there's the Cranberry Festival, featuring a parade and a fair.

Best time to go:
Best in the summer, May through October. Thanks to cold water and frequent fog and wind it might be quite chilly on the beach, even in the middle of the summer. Just a few miles inland, the temperature can quickly jump into the 90s (over 30C)
Warning:
The beaches are pristine but the water is cold, even in the summer. Fog and gale force winds are not uncommon.
