• Wright Brothers National Memorial
  

  
  Wright Brothers National Memorial commemorates two ingenious brothers from Dayton, OH who, in 1900, choose the sparsely populated area known as the Outer Banks to conduct a series of experiments that three years later resulted in the world’s first heavier than air, powered controlled flight.
  
  

• Hatteras village
  

  
  On the southern end of Hatteras Island, Hatteras, or as the locals call it, Hatteras Village, is known for its ties to offshore fishing. The village of Hatteras from the 1700s is a fishing center, with large commercial and sport fleets operating from its docks and marinas.
  
  

• Cape Hatteras lighthouse
  

  
  The iconic Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton was reopened to the public in 2000 following a massive relocation effort, which moved the lighthouse back 2,900 feet to save it from toppling into the encroaching sea. It has exibits on the island's maritime history and offers a magnificent view of the island.
  
  

• Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
  

  
  Across Oregon Inlet, the 5,834 acres of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge attract birders from all over the country to see snow geese in winter and wading shore and upland birds in summer. Some 265 species of birds winter here. At the Pea Island Visitor Center starts North Pond Wildlife Trail, a good, flat, easy trail that stretches for about 4 miles south of Oregon Inlet.
  
  

• Frisco Native American Museum
  

  
  The Native American Museum, at the village of Frisco, is a loving collection of arts and crafts from around the US, including a drum from a Hopi kiva, or prayer chamber. The museum also offers several acres of forested nature trails.
