A good ski resort on the northern face of Mount Bachelor. The longest run is just over 1.5 miles (2.4 km). There are 10 chairlifts, one of which goes up to the summit and serves great Alpine off-piste skiing terrain. The mountain is famous for its dry snow with typical snowfall of over 350 inches (900 cm) per year and a mid-winter base over 100 inches (250 cm). The resort boasts a lift-served vertical drop of 3,300 feet (1,000 m) with a lift running to 9,000 feet (2,750 m). As one of the tallest mountains in the vicinity, Mount Bachelor often experiences high wind speeds causing the chairlift to the summit to be put on standby. Mt Bachelor offers one of the nation's longest ski seasons, mid-November through the end of May.

The Lava River Cave near Bend, Oregon, is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The cave is an excellent example of a lava tube. At 5,211 feet (1,588 m) in length, the northwest section of the cave is the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon. One of the most unique parts of the cave is the Sand Garden, located about 3,000 feet (914 m) from the entrance. Here the floor of the cave is covered with sand. The sand was carried into the cave by dripping water. The sand is fine volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Mazama 6,600 years ago. Rain and melting snow carried the ash down from the surface through cracks in the rock and deposited it on the floor of the cave one grain at a time.

The city of Bend was started as a logging town but is now identified as a gateway for many outdoor sports, including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting, skiing, and golf. It is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range along the Deschutes River. Here the Ponderosa Pine forest transitions into the high desert, characterized by arid land, junipers, sagebrush, and bitter-brush.
