How to get there
Most safaris to the Serengeti start from the town of Arusha. The best option is to fly into Kilimanjaro Int'l Airport (KIA), 30 mi from Arusha. It is also possible to fly to Dar es Salaam, and use a domestic flight to Arusha Airport (ARK). From there, your tour operator will drive you to Serengeti (about 200 mi / 8 hrs by bumpy dirt roads), with day-long stops at Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara. More luxury tour operators will fly you from Arusha in a small charter plane to one of the airstrips in the park.
Alternatively, fly to Nairobi, Kenya, and take a tour from there, via Masai Mara park.
