One of Santorini's four clifftop villages, Oia is the most dramatically-situated, overlooking Ammoudi Bay to the west and Armeni Bay to the east. It's also known for some of the island's most spectacular sunsets, so get here at least an hour before sunset and claim your vantage point in advance.

From cave hotels to whitewashed palaces, Santorini offers plentiful luxurious accommodation. Kapari Natural Resort is an yposkafo - traditional dwelling built into a cliff face, as is Perivolas with an infinity pool to boot. Astra Suites and the cave dwellings of Katikies both offer great views of the Caldera, while Homeric Poems] www.homericpoems.gr/ combines contemporary design with great views of the Aegean Sea.

Santorini's answer to Pompeii, Akrotiri is one of the best-preserved Minoan Bronze Age settlements in Greece. A volcanic eruption buried it in ash in the 17th century B.C., which helped the preservation of the multi-level buildings, and particularly its impressive frescoes (most of which however have been moved to the museum in Thera, and some even to Athens)

Santorini has numerous beaches. Black-sand Kamari is popular with topless sunbathers and its taverns serve good fish, as do those on Perissa beach. Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia) is the most striking-looking, Koloumbos is a nudist hot-spot, cliff-fronted White Beach (Aspri Paralia) is reachable only by boat, and if you want seclusion, then the moonscape of Vlyhada should appeal.

The island's cuisine revolves around locally-caught fresh fish and seafood and ingredients yielded by the rich volcanic soil; dishes to try include cod baked with paprika and cherry tomatoes, octopus salad with white eggplant, and fava dip. Santorini is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world; local vintages include Santorini, Nykteri and Vinsanto and wine tasting tours are widely available.

Imerovigli is a village on the island of Santorini, Greece, adjacent to the north of the island capital Fira. Imerovigli is mostly famous for its beautiful sunset, that it is called "balcony to the Aegean".

Pyrgos is a village located at the highest point on the island, with labyrinthine medieval alleyways, a monastery and sunset views rivaling Oia.

Santorini's volcanic origins are responsible for the diver playground of underwater lava tubes and caves, and the reefs, walls and wrecks also teem with marine life. The best diving sites include The Caves, Faros Reef, Adiavatous Reef, the shipwreck at New Volcano and the wall at White Island.
