Majestic and wild, the Adirondacks, a mountain range with 42 peaks over 4000 ft high, rival any of the nation's wilderness areas for sheer awe-inspiring beauty. The park and forest preserve include towns, mountains, lakes, rivers and more than 2000 miles of hiking trails. There's good trout, salmon and pike fishing, along with excellent camping spots.

The body of water called Lake Placid is in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York in the United States of America. The lake is approximately 2,170 acres, and has an average depth of about 50 feet.

Lake Placid is best known as the two-time site of the Winter Olympics. Lake Placid first hosted in 1932 and they hosted the event again 48 years later in 1980. Hotels, restaurants, bookstores and shops line the frontier-like main street in town, which actually fronts Mirror Lake. Skiers head to nearby Whiteface Mountain, with 80 trails and a serious 1000 m/ 3400 ft vertical drop.

At 4,900 ft (1,480 m), Whiteface Mountain's summit offers a 360-degree view of the Adirondacks and clear-day glimpses of Vermont and even Canada. Unique among the High Peaks, Whiteface features a developed summit and accessibility by motor vehicle. Whiteface Memorial Highway reaches a parking area at an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,400 m), with the remaining 267 feet (80 m) being obtained by tunnel and elevator. The mountain's east slope is home to a major ski area which hosted the alpine skiing competition of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad is a tourist railway located in the Adirondack Park that operates on the tracks between Utica and Lake Placid.

The High Peaks Region is becoming quite well known for their slides and the use of those slides to access the summit of many of the High Peaks. Most slides don't require ropes, just good traction boots.

How to get there
The Lake Placid Airport serves only charter and scenic planes. The closest domestic airport is Adirondack Airport in Saranac Lake. The closest international airports are Plattsburgh NY, Albany NY, Burlington VT and Montreal (Quebec). Lake Placid is about 5 hours from New York City and 2.5 hours from Montreal by car.
