These two sections are the nearest to Beijing and among the most crowded sections of the Great Wall.

This section is a photographic hotspot due to its unique style, steep mountains and beautiful scenery. 'Jiankou', is translated as 'Arrow Nock' in English, because the shape of the mountain is like an arrow, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock.

Simatai, a section of the Great Wall of China located in the north of Miyun County, 120 km northeast of Beijing, holds the access to Gubeikou, a strategic pass in the eastern part of the Great Wall.

Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County 70 km northeast of Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east.

Jinshanling, a section of the Great Wall of China located in the mountainous area in Luanping County, 125 km northeast of Beijing. This section of the wall is connected with the Simatai section to the east.

The hike from Jinshangling to Simatai -- you walk on the wall -- is roughly 10 km (6 miles). It is a significant hike but you will be rewarded with spectacular views and a good day of exercise.

This is the place of beginning of the Great Wall. It is located at Shanhai pass where the Great Wall touches the sea.

Near the ticket office of the slide way about 380 black bears, brown bears and Malayan Sun Bears live in 20,000 square meters park.

How to get there
The Great Wall runs across the entire north border of the old empire, and thus can be accessed from many cities. Badaling, 50 mi / 1 hr north of Beijing, is the closest and most crowded (tourist trap). Jinshanling and Simatai are 100 mi / 2 hr from Beijing, but are much better. Map
