Tiananmen Square is a large city square in the center of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen Gate located to its North, separating it from the Forbidden City. Tiananmen Square is the third largest square in the world.

The oldest parts of Beijing - the hutong neighbourhoods - are found near the Drum and Bell Towers and by Beihai Lake. These date back to the Yuan dynasty (13th-14th centuries) and consist of narrow alleyways and traditional single-storey courtyard homes.
