The Himalayan kingdom is an excellent trekking destination. There are at least 27 good day hikes around the capital of Thimphu, ranging from easy to strenuous. More demanding is the 2-week Jhomolhari trek in the high Himalayas, with a stop at Gasa hot springs. The toughest trek is the 3-week Snowman that runs from Paro to Lunana that crosses several high passes.

Paro Taktsang is a prominent Himalayan Buddhist sacred site and temple complex, located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley. A temple complex was first built in 1692, around the "tiger lair" cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years in the 8th century.

Bhutan's Buddhist-themed festivals are a visitor highlight. The Tsechu festivals commemorate the deeds of Padmasanbhava and involves colorful costume, impressive masks and dancing. Folk dance and singling are an important part of festivals, with zeys - elaborately choreographed vocal performances - a central feature.

Constructed in 1638, Punakha Dzong is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures. The Dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Kagyu school. It is a six-storied structure with a central tower, at an elevation of 1,200 m (4,0000 ft) with a scenic, mountainous background.

A hike up Zuri Dzong mountain gives you a bird's eye view of the entire Paro Valley. On the mountain there is a cave where the Buddha allegedly came to meditate in the 8th century.
