Langkawi has many popular white-sand beaches. Pantai Cenang is the most popular, with the most guesthouses and restaurants, Pasir Tengkorak is small and very pretty, Tanjung Rhu and Datai Bay are unspoiled, with private resorts, and Pantai Tengah is lined with all-inclusive family resorts.

This waterfall is found on the west side of the island, near the cable car. It consists of seven pools, which are connected to each other by natural water slides made of smooth rock. It's a 10-minute walk from the car park to the top of the falls.

Pulau Payar is one of the many islands off mainland Kedah in the Strait of Malacca. It is situated south of Langkawi, a more famous archipelago. Pulau Payar's status as a marine park offers protection for its diverse marine life and there are numerous diving and snorkeling sites.

One of the most popular pastimes on Langkawi are the boat tours - from island-hopping tours that take in the small islands around Langkawi and include swimming and a stop to see the sea eagles feeding, and jet ski safaris to and mangrove tours that are particularly good for wildlife watchers - either by boat or by kayak.

Gunung Raya is Langkawi's tallest mountain (881m), covered in jungle and reachable via a winding paved road that snakes its way up to a resort hotel and lookout tower at the summit. From the summit there are good panoramic views of the island.

At the base of the Langkawi Cable Car, Oriental Village is a tourist complex consisting of numerous restaurants, with elephant rides, traditional music demonstrations, snake charmers and more.

Galeria Perdana is an entertaining museum in the east of the island that houses all manner of gifts given by the heads of different countries to Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad when he was the Prime Minister of Malaysia. These include bejewelled weapons, porcelain, musical instruments, Islamic art and gold and silver objects.
